The Most Important Service Your Boat Needs

A single freeze with water still in the engine block can crack it! That’s a repair that costs more than a decade of professional winterization. Charter Marine winterizes every engine type, from PWC two-strokes to inboard wakeboard boats with ballast systems.

Oil Change

Upper and lower unit oil drained and replaced. Old oil left over winter can damage internal components.

New Oil Filter

Fresh filter installed so contaminants from the season aren’t sitting in your engine all winter.

Fuel Conditioner

Stabilizer added to fuel system to prevent gum, varnish, and ethanol breakdown over the off-season.

Antifreeze (as needed)

Marine-grade antifreeze runs through the cooling system to displace any water that could freeze.

Fogging Oil (as needed)

Sprayed into cylinders to coat internal engine surfaces, preventing corrosion during long-term storage.

Battery Storage

Battery disconnected and stored to extend life. Cold weather and parasitic drain can ruin a battery.

Common Questions

Winterization Questions?

Schedule winterization for late September through mid-October. The first hard freeze in central Minnesota typically arrives late October to early November, and your boat needs to be winterized before that, not after. Once water in your engine block freezes, the damage is done. Books fill up in October, so earlier is always better.

Pricing covers labor and standard fluids (oil, antifreeze, stabilizer, fogging oil). Parts like oil filters, fuel filters, spark plugs, and impellers are quoted separately based on your engine. We’ll itemize parts on your written quote so there are no surprises.

Wakeboard and surf boats with ballast systems have significantly more plumbing, pumps, and water-holding components than other boats. All of it needs to be drained or flushed with antifreeze to prevent freeze damage. Ballast bags, ballast pumps, ballast plumbing, and surf gates all add labor compared to a standard inboard. The pricing reflects the complexity.

Yes. PWC winterization (both 2-stroke and 4-stroke) includes the same complete process as boat winterization – fuel stabilization, fluid changes, fogging, and battery storage.

Yes. Indoor storage is climate-protected, not heated to room temperature. If temperatures drop below freezing in the storage building (they will), any water in your engine will freeze just like it would outdoors. Winterization is required regardless of where the boat is stored.

Don’t Wait for the First Freeze

Winterization slots fill up by mid-October every year. Schedule now to protect your investment and avoid the rush.
